I think people can overcome the type of difficult moments suggested in this piece by simply stating what they need and expect from a lover. The main character may not be as indifferent as he seems . . . he may harbor unexpressed feelings and desires just as she does. Sex may be casual if we allow it, but nothing is lost by demanding to be taken seriously.
